How Many Units?

Most people need about 20 to 40 units on each side. Men and people with very strong muscles often need more. A larger muscle needs a bigger dose, and that is why prices differ from person to person. We start with a careful dose and adjust at your next visit.

What Happens at Your Visit

  1. Check-up. The doctor looks at your jaw and feels the muscle while you clench your teeth.
  2. Marking. The injection points are marked on the lower half of the muscle.
  3. Injections. A few small injections go in on each side. Numbing cream is available if you want it.
  4. After. You can go straight back to normal life.

Side Effects and Risks

Masseter Botox is off-label. That means the product isn’t officially approved for this use, though doctors have used it for years. Most side effects are mild and short-lived:

  • Chewing tiredness, especially with tough food, for a few weeks
  • A headache
  • A slightly uneven smile or an odd bulge when you clench, if the dose or placement isn’t right

Some studies suggest the jaw bone can thin when the muscle is weakened again and again over a long time. Research in people is limited. This is why we use the lowest dose that works and don’t recommend constant top-ups.

You can’t reverse masseter Botox. It wears off by itself over a few months.

Who Should Not Have It

Skip masseter Botox if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a muscle or nerve condition, have an infection at the injection site, or are allergic to botulinum toxin. Tell the doctor about any medicine you take and any dental or jaw problems.
